Hungary works on 72 hours. Where there is a well-founded suspicion of an offence punishable by imprisonment, the police, a prosecutor or a judge may order detention for that period — and a motion for pre-trial detention must be filed with a court before the 72 hours lapse. If it is not, the person must be released.

The three separate powers are worth distinguishing, because people describe what happened to them inaccurately and it changes the analysis. Being held for eight hours to establish identity is not the same as detention on suspicion, and the clock that matters starts only with the second.
