Arrested in Dubai: 48 hours, and the travel ban that follows
UAE procedure gives the police 48 hours to refer the case to the Public Prosecution, which must question you within 24 hours more and then order remand or release. Remand can run for 14 days at a time. But the measure that lasts longest is usually not the detention: it is the travel ban, which continues after release and until the underlying case is resolved.

The travel ban is the real problem
Two different things go by that name and they behave differently. A criminal travel ban attaches to proceedings and is lifted when the case ends. A civil or financial ban — from an unpaid debt, a bounced cheque, a rental dispute — is imposed on a creditor's application and lifted when the debt is settled.
The practical difference at the airport is stark. With a financial ban you are stopped and turned away. With an active criminal warrant in the immigration system you are arrested at the counter, taken into custody and questioned. There is nothing in between.
During the investigation an objection can be filed with the supervising prosecutor, and the arguments that work are the ordinary ones: absence of flight risk evidenced by business ties, property and family presence; disproportion between the ban and the alleged offence; and defects in the original order.
Debt is a criminal matter here
This is the single biggest difference from European systems, and it catches people who consider themselves in a purely commercial dispute. A bounced cheque, an unpaid loan or a credit card default can produce a police file, a travel ban and, in some situations, arrest.
An absconding report filed by an employer is a related trap: it does not stop you leaving but it blocks re-entry, and people discover it only when they try to come back.
Conduct that is not an offence at home
- Alcohol outside licensed premises, and public intoxication.
- Public decency and conduct in public, including gestures and language.
- Relationships and cohabitation, where the rules differ substantially from European ones.
- Social media: insult, defamation and publishing images of others are criminal offences and are actively prosecuted.
- Medicines: substances lawfully prescribed in Europe may be controlled here, and the prescription should travel with them.
- Drugs: penalties are severe and traces detected on entry have led to prosecutions.
The Italian side
Only a lawyer admitted in the Emirates can act before an Emirati authority. What the Italian side handles is everything with an Italian end: a parallel proceeding, an alert circulating, and — where the person is wanted by Italy — extradition, which between Italy and a non-EU state proceeds under the applicable instrument or, failing one, on the basis of reciprocity.
